No Sorrow in God’s Blessings: Devotion for Thursday October 18, 2012
Text: Proverbs 10: 22 – The blessing of the Lord makes one rich and He adds no sorrow with it (New King James Version).
The blessings of God upon man vary in scope but the intention and ultimate goal is to make man rich. The blessing may be in form of talent, skill, knowledge, power, grace, favour, etc. Read through these blessings again as listed above and think of any rich person in your neighbourhood that does not possess one or more of them. You will certainly see at least oneof them, which is the source of that person’s wealth. Adam Clarke Commentary says that “Whatever we receive in the way of providence, has God's blessing in it, and will do us good. Cares, troubles, and difficulties come with all property not acquired in this way; but God's blessing gives simple enjoyment, and levies no tax upon the comfort.” God does not give us what will bring sorrow. His is always a blessing that will single us
Have you identified your own blessing (Mt 25:14 & 15)? God supplies us with abilities to make wealth (Deut 8:17 & 18). The knowledge on how to use them brings riches of varying degree. When you use your blessings for the good of others as God intended, it will not add any sorrow (Mt 25:28 – 30), rather you will receive more blessings (Matthew 25: 28 cf. Proverbs 28: 27, Genesis 24: 35 & Genesis 26: 12 – 14).
Note that wealth is a blessing when we used it as God intended and to His glory. Are you rich and in bondage? You need to go back to God in repentance because His blessings do not come with any anguish or sorrow.
Food for Thought: How can blessing add sorrow to someone’s lives?
1. Pray you will use your blessings as God intended.
2. Pray you will not live in sorrow in the midst of blessings
