It Takes Endurance: Devotion for Monday February 25, 2013
Text: 2 Timothy 2: 12 – If we endure, we shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us (New King James Version).
Endurance/perseverance is a virtue that is very essential in our Christian life. Anyone who cannot persevere cannot go through the strait road that leads to eternal life (Matthew 7: 14). James 5:11 speaks of perseverance of Job. Job suffered and endured many afflictions for the sake of righteousness. He did not give up despite all the pressures. At last God honoured Job (Job 42: 10– 17).
Some translations have ‘if we endure’ as ‘if we suffer.’ According to People New Testament Commentary, “We die in order to live. So our suffering with Christ works out for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory (2 Corinthians 4: 17).” Compare also Romans 8: 17 and Matthew 19: 27 and 28. 1 Peter 4:13 urges us to rejoice when we suffer for the sake of Christ
What are you suffering for the sake of Christ? Are people ridiculing you because you are not married despite your commitment to God? Are you being persecuted in your neighbourhood, school, office, etc because of your faith? Is your marriage under threat because of Christ? Don’t give up. Remember Matthew 16:26 and Mark 8:34 - 37
Food for Thought: You have received Christ; persevere in receiving him. You have come to trust him; keep on trusting him – Charles Spurgeon.
1. Pray for grace to endure suffering for sake of heaven
2. Pray you will not deny Christ in time of suffering
