He Does Not Change: Devotion for May 15, 2012
Text: Malachi 3:6 – For I am the Lord, I do not change; therefore, you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob (New King James Version).
God is full of mercies, which endure forever (Lamentation 3:22-23). For this reason we are not consumed. God through His Prophet made it clear to the Israelites that His mercies have kept them. From their action, they desire death but for God’s mercies they were preserved. See Malachi 1:2, 6, 7 & 12, Malachi 2:8, 13 & 17 and Malachi 3:7 & 8). Despite all these ‘abomination’ committed by the Israelites, God remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Leviticus 26:45, Romans 11:28).
Lord as used here is “A name implying His immutable faithfulness in fulfilling His promises: the covenant name of God to the Jews (Ex 6:3), called here "the sons of Jacob," in reference to God's covenant with that patriarch” according to Jamieson Fausett – Brown Commentary. God is ever faithful and He keeps covenant. It is on this basis that the Israelites are not consumed.
Today God is reassuring us that we will not be consumed because of His covenant with us in Christ Jesus. If God were to judge us according to our deeds, who would stand? He is indeed a compassionate God (Exodus 33:19 and Romans 9:15), otherwise, we would have been consumed. All He desires from us is to worship Him in absolute sincerity, obedience, faith, and love. When we continue in this, He will forever show us mercy.
Food For Thought: Have you ever done something that would have brought death sentence on you as in the Old Testament?
1) Thank God for His compassion that does not fail.
2) Ask God to show you mercies and compassion in all you do.
3) Pray for grace to live your life to please God.
