Nigeria and India are rated as third world countries. The criteria for this grading I cannot tell. However, I want to believe that this grading which presumable was done by the Western World was long overdue to be reviewed as most countries in the third world class are no longer the same. By infrastructural development, economy and per capital income, etc, some of these countries are far apart yet they are classified as third world countries.
I am a Nigerian but have been privileged to have visited four three other countries. Out of these countries visited is India. It was necessity that took me to India and I have visited India as much as 7 times since 2004. My visits have afforded me the opportunity to assess India and Nigeria as co-third world countries. From my assessment of the two countries, I have personally found out that between Nigerian and India are miles apart.
First and foremost, Nigeria is a lawless country. In Nigeria, the Law enforcement agents and the people are all lawless. In Nigeria, people behave the way the like. People will open their eyes and use refuse from their homes and business to fill drainage channels. The government will enact a law and people will be nonchalant about it. Court will give injunction and nobody obeys. Recently, a member of the Federal ruling party said his party will overturn the Supreme Court ruling removing the Governor of Kebbi State. What gave him the impunity and audacity to say so? Act of lawlessness.
This is not so in India though there are some people there too who are lawless but not the majority of the people. India has so many festivals that they use banana stem and leaves with other leaves of plants. I have never seen them use it to block the gutters. A day after the festival, they have evacuated and disposed them carefully and neatly. Recently, the new Inspector General of Police in Nigeria ordered all police check points to be dismantled but they could not leave. They still hang around in some places to still intimidate and collect money. Is this not lawlessness when they ought to be law enforcement agency?
Again, in medical terms, India is over millions of miles ahead of Nigeria. I am writing this article now in Fortuna Icon – A guest house in Bangalore where I stayed for my Medical Checkup in Columbia Asia hospital Hebbal India. Right there in the guest house are over 50 Nigerians with the donors and attendant who came for Kidney Transplant operations. Nigeria lack medical equipments and well trained personnel to handle some medical problems. Nigeria generated over US$100million for Indians annually through medical tourism to India. The very few places they do transplant in Nigeria have been fraught with complications and are more expensive. People now prefer to undertake the risks and hazard of journey to go to India. If we are on the same level, can’t Nigeria have something to take care of her citizens? Presently, Nigerians are employing Indians to come over to Nigeria to establish hospitals. Yet we answer giant of Africa. I have not seen most people from other African countries the way I see Nigeria come into Indian cities of Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai, etc for medical treatment.
